Meeting of Mustachians this Saturday – Kailua Beach Park

This is just a note for the fun people of O’ahu who wrote emails and comments last week, interested in getting together. I’ll delete this post after the Hawaii trip ends, since it is only relevant to us islanders.

There are a surprising number of Mustachians around here – over 50 have gotten in touch since the “Wintering in Hawaii” post! So instead of trying to organize things formally by email, I thought we could just do things the easy way using the main blog.

This Saturday (Dec. 1st), let’s meet at the Kailua Beach Park to hang out. Bring some Potluck-style eats if you like, or just show up yourself. No official plans have been made, but it should be a great chance to meet friendly people (with whom you can openly admit you are an MMM reader), watch the sun go down, engage in some sand and water sports, have deep conversations, or enjoy some beverages – whatever you like.

  • 3:00PM until whenever (6:00 at least, later if we are having fun).
  • Ride a Bike if you’re local, or carpool if you can from the other side
  • Bring along a folding chair or two if you like
  • Hope to see you there!

We’ll be on the Southeast side of the park, near the boat ramp and close to the letters on this map:
http://goo.gl/maps/7yUI2

If I am organized enough, I may be able to create a cardboard Mustache banner to indicate which group is us, since there will probably be other people at the park on a Saturday afternoon/evening.

There will be a second event like this later in December once the rest of my family arrives. For now, it’ll be just me and the friends who own the place where the construction project is taking place. And you, of course.

See you there!

*Random special request:

Does anyone attending have a spare booster seat for a child that I could borrow for the time my wife and son are here? (mid-Dec to mid-Jan). We just need the bottom seat (back rest not necessary now that he is about 4ft tall and 50 lbs). We are trying to avoid carting our own back and forth from the mainland. I’ll also check Craigslist here.

    I’ll be there.

The first three military (servicemembers, veterans, or family members) who meet me there can have a free copy of “The Military Financial Independence & Retirement Pocket Guide”. It’s a gateway drug to the full-size book, which is available at military & state public libraries all over Oahu…

Ooh, my friend Molly from ROTC lives on Oahu. Not sure if she’s mustachian. I should tell her about it.

My daughter’s in an NROTC unit in Houston, and she has a couple friends aboard Pearl Harbor ships. If Molly can’t make it today but has questions, she can send me an e-mail.

I’d go if I were in Hawaii, definitely. :)

My little request: Please don’t delete this post after the event. It helps readers get a feel for the kind of person you are and the kind of community being created around this blog.

    It’s flavor. :)

Hiya MMM. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the family and I will make it down to the beach park on Saturday. As an extra, added bonus we have a booster seat you can use for the duration of your stay.

Though maybe I should post it on Craigslist and make you buy it… that extra $10 could make a difference in my early retirement!

Haha.. I’d be happy to contribute $10 to your fund, Colonel K!

It’s better if someone does not need the seat back, since we’ll probably need it to get a ride back to the airport in mid-January, then it will be in the custody of our Kailua friends.

From there, it can either be donated somewhere else, or returned to the owner, or saved by these folks since they are about to have their first baby – meaning the booster will come in handy in about 4 years :-)

Drat! 3 of our 4 family members will be at our tech rehearsal for “Annie” at Diamond Head Theatre that day and the 4th family member is 9 and can’t solo bike over. BUT, we do have an extra booster seat that we don’t need back-the 9 year old outgrew it. Please email me at the email associated with this reply if you can see it, if not I”ll email you shortly.

Also, if you are fans of musical theater and would like to see a free preview of “Annie” on December 6th at 7:30 p.m., I think I can swing 3 extra tickets. If that sounds like one Dante’s circles of hell for you, I understand, but our local theater in town is very good and I thought I’d put it out there!

        Aloha! Liz

I wonder how many objects get donated, refurbished, and/or resold from airports a year?

All those objects banned from flights, or too big and not worth the haul once arrived at the airport and in too much of a rush.

Well isn’t that google link the worst thing to see if you’re gearing up for a brutal Chicago winter! Even though it’s nonsensically warm today, I made the mistake of checking if Google had a street view of your meeting place. Completely envious right now. Enjoy!

Yeah, I agree with @Keith Ellis, this post is very annoying to those of us not in Hawaii (I’m in Chicago too, though it might not be so brutal due to climate change). But that annoying-ness is what got me and my dh into MMM in the first place–you guys are retired, and we found you during maternity leave, when I had to go back to work in a month even though what my kid really needed was to be near his nursing mom–me. And I was like, hey, why am I not retired? So that’s when I first got a clue 1. what blogs are for, like why anyone would read a blog, and 2. why I might want to earn money (I’m one of those mustachians who’s naturally frugal–more so than MMM, I think, but it never occurred to me to try to make lots of money until January, 2012, during said maternity leave). So I’ve started my own law firm, _and_ we’re working on selling our co-op apartment, which has a too-high interest rate and no way to pay early, and our plan is to build out our new-to-us Sprinter Van into an RV, and drive through Longmont on our way to points west (while I practice Illinois law online). This is why we seriously are going to bring a lavish dinner to MMM’s place. And it will not be sushi b/c we are vegetarians.

This is what a real Mustachian village is about! After fishing/learning/fun-hobby-work for 3 hours, they all gather to the local bonfire potluck with friends and family and enjoy the sunset. Once they all are FI’d, it is potentially like this for the rest of their lives.

I am actually going to be moving with my husband to Oahu when he we PCS there next June. Am looking for ideas on where to stay, or possibly to set up a rental deal if anyone is renting. Please contact me if you know of anyone renting for reasonable prices. We will be working with BAH funding, but I am as frugal as they come, so I want to help out some fellow Mustachians and possibly get a good deal myself! We will be based there for three years, so it has the potential to be a long-term rental situation if it works out. If there is a better forum to place this in, let me know!
