The New Logo Contest
I’ve been getting some emails and comments about that new logo/banner thing up there*. “What’s with the cruise ship?” “Where did ‘Badassity’ go.. did you finally cave in and sell out to Chase?”
No, sillyheads. I was just growing antsy for a new logo, since the old one had been up for many months. I loved it, and it was artfully drawn by a reader named Chris (and thanks again, Chris!).
As a reminder, it looked like this:
.. and that logo was in turn a long-overdue update of the original one I made with Mustachioed Dollarbills on Turntables and a mixer:
see, here on the Internet, you need to keep things fresh. New artwork is always a good thing.
Hearing me expressing those feelings over dinner, my six-year-old son decided he would create a new logo for me immediately. With a bit of help from me, he fired up Photoshop and we cropped and chopped together the silly scene you see at the time of writing, also shown below:
All image selection and placement was done solely by him, so I think of it as a peek into what Mustachianism feels to a young lad at the heart of the movement. And I like it!
But at the same time, I think we can do more. Everyone has their own take, and many readers are pretty artsy and creative as well. So I figured we should open up the design to the whole world!
Rules:
- Send me a .jpg or .psd (Photoshop) image with dimensions of 981 x 190 pixels. Post it on your own web server or attach it to an email directed to mmm [at] [the domain name of this site].
- It should contain “Mr. Money Mustache”, and the sub-heading “Financial Freedom Through Badassity”.
- Sketchy hand-drawn elements and warm feelings are encouraged. Wood, rocks, nature, cross-hatching with an old ink pen.. all these are cool options.
- The prize to winning entries is just the fun of having your logo shown to all of this blog’s worldwide audience for many months to come – with a mention of your name or website if you like.
- There is no limit to the number of winners – I hope to have many to choose from and rotate through, but judging will be subject to the unpredictable whims of Mr. Money Mustache and anyone who happens to be sitting nearby at the time.
- Deadline is January 23rd, which is one week from today. I’ll post a follow-up article shortly thereafter.
If you want to use my own handwriting lettering, you can find it isolated in its own layer in the following .psd file:
http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/logo/mmm_2012_logo.psd
If right-clicking the link doesn’t work, you can paste that URL into your browser to get the file (size is 1.35MB).
Thanks for your interest and let the craziness begin!
* update – since writing this, there have been many great submissions! I took down the Junior MM cruise ship and I’m trying out a promissing reader submission in the interim, until the deadline. Keep them coming!

Mr. Money Mustache is a family man living in the United States who retired from work, relatively wealthy, at about age 30. After several years of retirement, he noticed that his still-working peers were envious of his lifestyle. They were making more money than he ever had, yet they were somehow still broke. So he decided to write this blog to educate the world on how it is done.
everytime i hear ‘mr. money moustache’ i picture the monopoly guy:

I personally like the old you made with your son! So cute!
Sounds like a fun contest. What a great way to connect with your readership :D I might try and enter a design just for fun heh.
Just for clarification… is that cruise ship hitting a huge wake at 100mph and giving its passengers the ride of their freaking life or sinking with Leonardo DiCpario onboard?
Knowing that your son was born with Mustachianism oozing from his pores, I’ll guess the latter.
It always looked like the ship was “popping a wheelie” to me…
This reminds me of the Great Battle of Mr Money Mustache versus the Fat Money Pig.
But I do like that you are more open to change in your old age! :)
That article came to mind for me to, though the fact that I happened to read it for the first time yesterday probably helped my memory.
Sounds like fun! Excited to see what others submit.
That’s exciting! I did wonder why all the employee dollars were drowning (or abandoning ship?).
I will try to think of a good idea!
What are your thoughts on more than 1 submission from the same person?
Photoshop?! Are you MMM and I must school you on the virtues of gimp? And the whole open source way of life, for that matter?
Very True! As an upcoming Mustachian i only use open source products now. Zero cost, and my laptop lasts for ever without ever slowing down thanks to Linux!
Good call on Gimp.
I want to call out Inkscape for those that don’t know about that too. While Gimp is the Photoshop equivalent Inkscape is the alternative to Adobe Illustrator.
Open Office for Word/Excel/Power Point…
Actually, rather than just list everything out there, here is a site to see open source alternatives: http://www.osalt.com/
Seriously!
MMM himself asking for a face punch?
Buying proprietary software designed to hook you in when free alternatives provide all the functionality he’d need, plus building community?
Posting images in a proprietary format requiring buying that software???
There’s probably an explanation, but I suspect he’ll change after a few posts like this.
Good points, fellas. I happen to have an old copy of Photoshop that I got for free from an Adobe employee, so cost hadn’t been a consideration. I should indeed switch to open-source photo editing to ensure compatibility with Mustachian/nonpirate subset of the user world. (Since I’m assuming nobody except pro graphic designers actually pays full retail for exorbitantly priced things like Photoshop).
You had me at “Badassity”. I’m glad to hear it will return!!!
I’m glad to hear that you didn’t cave in to Chase. I was actually a bit worried about that, especially since a few of my other favorite bloggers have been drifting towards shameless commercialization recently.
PS: I’ve been reading your blog for a while and it sounds like you’re a great parent. I love how you spend so much time with your son doing so many different things.
I love your son’s banner — the bills look like joyful flying fish! Also love that you made it with him and actually used it. I have a 7-year-old and she would love doing something like this. :-)
Great idea on the contest. I bet you or Mrs. MM could whip up a script that serves a random logo image to each visitor. That way people could get a surprise every time they visit.
Wow, the one on right now is super nice! With the wood planks and the coin. Looks awesome!
I agree with @Jimbo, this logo is truly a work of art! I would love to read about how it was designed.
Just discovered this blog about two weeks ago, and I have been obsessively reading every post from the beginning of time. Fantastic information, for which i am eternally grateful MMM!
