After thirteen years of helping readers through case studies, helping friends with their early retirement plans, and even coaching people as part of in-person events like Camp FI, I’ve come to realize that I really like helping people sort out their finances!
So this year, I finally decided to try working with people individually on a confidential basis, because there seem to be so many people who are almost there, doing great with earning and investing, but just needing to figure out a few last details and know when it’s safe to walk out of the cubicle. And it has been a great experience so far.
We typically focus on questions like:
- Am I ready to retire, given this big confusing pile of assets and spending plans?
- Should I keep these rental houses, or sell them and invest in index funds instead?
- Should I pay off my primary mortgage, or downsize (or upgrade) my house?
- How does a future pension or inheritance or Social Security affect my early retirement plans?
- What about other life situations like divorce, health insurance, ongoing medical spending, raising kids, moving to a different country, or renting out the basement to my inlaws?
In other words, pretty much anything you want to figure out.
So far, I’ve been thrilled with the results – people have been having some pretty big breakthroughs in their understanding of their own finances, fixing big holes in their budget and substantially improving their investment plans. But most importantly, I’ve enjoyed seeing coaching clients gain the confidence to just relax and start enjoying the fruits of their life’s work.
Disclaimer
I’m not a licensed financial advisor or therapist or anything else like that. Just a 50-year-old retired Dad who happens to have read a lot of books and written a lot of articles on these things, and worked with a lot of people in a wide range of life situations. I can’t take liability for anything that happens based on my advice, but I do promise to do my best to help guide you straight.
“Help Me Fix My Life For $1k” – How it Works
If all this sounds right for you, send me an email using the email address “newsletter” at the domain name of this site, with “Coaching” in the subject line. Write up a quick description of your life situation and what you’re hoping to learn and achieve.
I should get a chance to read them all, but will only write back to people who I think I can help. Also, I’m only planning to work with about 1-2 people per month, so we need to keep this first stage efficient.
If I write back to take your case, I’ll ask you for the following stuff:
- A complete description of all your assets, debts, and annual spending
- A list of questions and life plans and stuff you want to discuss, based on all of the above
If it still looks like ago, you can lock in the coaching via a $1000 payment (Venmo) and we’ll work through these steps:
- I’ll start with a complete email review of your finances, doing my best to answer all your questions in advance. I may create a spreadsheet in some cases for illustration.
- We can then schedule a call (talking or video via any standard platform like Google Meet or Zoom) to talk everything over for about an hour
- Bonus: if you’re in the Longmont, Colorado area, we may have the option of doing the meeting at the MMM-HQ coworking space too.
- Final email questions or follow-ups are welcome over the coming week or so too.
And that’s it!
I’m looking forward to meeting many more interesting people and hearing about your interesting problems.
