Two Unusual Internet Roadtrips

Hi there.

I have no actual article for you today, but I thought I’d share two other things that popped up on the Internet this morning.

First of all, I had the opportunity to take a virtual trip to Singapore, where Ellesse Chow, the editor of a website called “Goal Setting College” conducted an email interview with me to share the idea of saving for early retirement with her own readers. It was fun, and it was my first interview of any sort. Since Singapore is a far-away land for me, I figured this was a good way to test out the interview waters in a place where not everyone will see it, much like how Arnold occasionally does commercials in Japan to avoid wearing out his image in the US. Here’s that interview if you are interested: http://www.goal-setting-college.com/success-stories/how-to-retire-early-and-live-well/

Secondly, someone made a nice Onion-style “Infographic” out of the Cost of Commuting article that I posted a couple of weeks ago. It covers the same information as the original article, but makes it sound much more exciting and important because of the giant fonts and pictures. Since it has a link back to MMM, perhaps this will start a second round of viral internet forwarding for that post (it has been read by about 70,000 people so far!)

Hi MMM, once again, thank you very much! I’m very humbled to be able to have you in the interview…. Cheers, Ellesse

Seems the commenters on Lifehacker can’t see the forest for the trees. Oh well, it opened my eyes.

I loved the article and now the Infographic! What next MMM the film Down the red carpet for yo and the family Arriving by bike, a cinema house with solar power and film shown on a bio-degradable film.

Love all your posts MMM. You are an inspiration.

I would have written this under the original Cost of Commuting article, but apparently older posts get locked for new comments.

That article was a big part of my decision to move 15 miles from Oakland back to San Pablo (where I lived 6 years ago) which is within a 10 minute bike ride of my partner’s job (instead of a 45minute drive)

Hey, that is cool! So have you moved already, or is it coming up? Is your new location still favorable to the biodiesel hauling gig?

(Regarding the cost of commuting article – that is the only article where I closed the comments, just because there were over 100 already, and there are so many random links from the Internet onto that article that every day I was getting 99% repeat comments from people who didn’t want to read the other 100 comments, but still wanted to say something. In this situation, I figure more comments don’t add any value for future readers.)

A quick note about infographics: I don’t know anything about streamerline, but a lot of the people putting together infographics are from questionable financial companies with nothing to do with the topic being discussed, they just need reputable sites to link to them to improve their search enging rankings (http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2011/12/ending-the-infographic-plague/250474/)

    Hi Mr MM,

I am a reader who just started reading your blog a couple of days ago and I happen to be from Singapore. While I admire your methods and principles and would love to adopt them, I am wondering how easy/feasible it is in Singapore due to the excessively high cost of housing mainly, and everything else in general. It’s like living in NY with no option to move out. I was thinking of drawing up a case study of sorts, wondering if you might be interested in studying such a far flung country :)

The infographic site is now gone, but you can still see it here.

I love that you call it an “Onion-style” infographic. I believe The Onion is trying to make them look like USA Today infographics. For those outide the US, USA Today is a newspaper shaped object they leave outside your door when you stay at a hotel, written at a 7-year-old’s I Can Read It All By Myself level. Recently, they have stopped running plagiarized crossword puzzles.
